To start Everest base camp(EBC) trek, most people fly from kathmandu(1,400 m) to lukla( 2,860 m),dubbed the scariest runway in the world, unless you’d prefer a bus to Jiri or Salleri and 4 to 5 day’s hike from there to reach the Lukla trailhead.

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”.This saying of ancient chinese philosopher Lao Tzu inspired us for a tiring, but rewarding hike on well-marked trails, through a truly unique landscape. From Lukla to Everest Base Camp is a minimum of 7 days including one day off to acclimatize. After few hours trek from lukla we enter a small village called Phakding(2,610 m), a couple of good internet cafe, pool house, bars will make you forget your first day’s pain. Next day is for the very famous Namche Bazar( 3,480m), infamous for it’s long consistent steep inclines uphill. Namche Bazaar, the sherpa capital, is filled with restaurants, shops, museums, ancient monasteries and so on. It is better to acclimatize in Namche before heading anywhere further. An acclimatization day is used to get your body used to the lower oxygen content in the air but its not a rest day as you can always explore the places nearby. Khumjung and Khunde, the twin green villages,at an altitude of 3800m are the largest community of Sherpa in the Khumbu valley which includes tourist interests like Khumjung Monastery, Tenzing Hillary memorial park, bird sanctuary, hilary memorial viewpoint and so on. One thing you shouldn’t be missing on this day is a good lunch at the Everest View Hotel.Situated within the Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the hotel offers a 360 degree view of the awe inspiring peaks.Opened in 1971, Hotel Everest View has been listed on the Guinness Book of World Records (2004) as the Highest Placed Hotel in the world at 3880m.

As we leave Namche next morning for tengboche(3,867 m), there is magnificent view of Himalayas which would be always remembered by you.The landscapes unraveling in front of us at each turn of the trail are fantastic.

We come to tengboche monastery, Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Sherpa community and the largest gumba in the Khumbu region. The sunrise and the sunsets of this region would surely make you feel that you are in a different world.Me along with my trek partner Shashwot Risal didnt waste a time to capture those in our camera.

Next day was for dingboche .As we trek higher elevations, we can see Mount Kusum Kanguru(6,367 m), Thamserku(6,623 m), Ama Dablam(6,812 m), Cho Oyu(8,201 m), Nuptse(7,861 m), Lhotse Shar(8,516 m), Pumori(7,161 m), the grand peak of Mount Everest(8848 m) and other beautiful sister mountains that harmonize the scenery of Khumbu. The view of more than 150 mountains simultaneously during the route gives greater exposure to Alpine lovers. The Trek from Tengboche to Dingboche took about 5.5 hours. Dingboche is at an elevation of 4410m so that meant the trek was quite challenging due to the elevation.Similar trek for the next day to lobuche (4,925m) and another day trek will lead you to the final stop on the EBC trek, Gorak Shep(5,170 m).

A complete 3 hours walk to Everest Base Camp from Gorak Shep consists of huge boulders and we are following a single dusty, rocky pathway .Couple of painted boulders, 360 degree view of breathtaking mountains, prayer flags are what you can expect here. Everest climbers acclimatize several days in EBC.40,000 people per year take the trek from the Lukla airport to the Nepal Everest Base Camp. Hats off to the sherpas who carry supplies of the tourists to the EBC and further up.

On 25 April 2015 an earthquake measuring 7.8 M struck Nepal and triggered an avalanche on Pumori that swept through the South Base Camp.At least 19 people were said to have been killed as a result. Just over two weeks later, on May 12, a second quake struck measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale. Some of the trails leading to Everest Base Camp were damaged by these earthquakes and needed repairs. This year’s Tenzing Hillary Everest marathon 2015 (world’s highest marathon) is starting on 5th october with the theme Run to Rebuild – Khumbu.

Next day is for climbing up Kala Patthar (5,643 m) for a dramatic close up view of Everest, with panoramic vista of the front of Pumori.Kala Patthar means black rock. It is a hill behind Gorakshep which offers splendid views of the Mount Everest Panorama. It takes about 2 hours to climb Kala Patthar and the trail begins near the Gorak Shep. Heading back to lukla, we will have couple of busy day on downhill. The attractive Nuptse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku say you goodbye. The very unpleasing Khumbu Cough denied to leave me for next couple of weeks.

With some good travel gear, good night sleep, preparing for cold and rain, avoiding altitude sickness, avoiding sun, staying hydrated, being slow and steady the trek comes out to be a life time experience.
